Within our bio you will find adjectives that attempt to best describe what the viewer/listener to these pages will find, things like ‘open format’, ‘technical’ and ‘heavily themed’ are all mentioned, and, all are extremely relevant when describing this mixtape from London based DJ and Producer Chris Read.
Chris describes this mix as, “Philadelphia International Records is to the City of Brotherly Love what Stax is to Memphis or Motown is to Detroit: a powerhouse label representing the cream of the era’s Soul talent. Helmed by songwriting / producer duo Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, Philadelphia International was launched in 1971. In the years that followed Philadelphia International would release classic album after classic album from a roster of artists that included some of the biggest names of the era, among them The O’Jays, Billy Paul, The Three Degrees, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and Teddy Pendergrass. The label’s all star roster delivered a mature and refined brand of Soul – message music which covered topics ranging from Civil Rights and the Vietnam war to matters of the heart. In celebration of the label’s 50th Anniversary, we are pleased to present this exclusive mixtape, pairing classic tracks from the catalogue with a selection notable Hip Hop and R&B tracks to have sampled them, mixed by Chris Read.”
